Urethane cement advantages

Urethane cement, also called cementitious urethane, is considered the most reliable industrial flooring. It installs quickly and protects concrete from thermal shock, impact, corrosion, chemical attack and abrasion, on new concrete, deteriorated acid brick or worn concrete.

Urethane cement flooring uses

Why urethane cement is reliable

Urethane cement has physical properties close to concrete, including abrasion resistance, hardness, tensile and compressive strength, with higher flexural strength. Impact is absorbed equally by the coating and the slab, so the coating stays bonded.

Epoxy is harder and more brittle than concrete, so the same impact can crack or delaminate it. The same match explains why urethane cement withstands very high temperatures and thermal shock.

Urethane cement has very high chemical resistance, tolerates moisture and has a seamless surface that does not harbor contaminants. It is acceptable for USDA and FDA inspected facilities, with an optional antimicrobial additive. Urethane concrete coating is considered submersible, so it handles wet food processing environments, with excellent non-slip qualities.

Moisture vapor transmission in Colorado

Colorado has frequent moisture vapor transmission (MVT) problems from temperature swings, an arid climate and high water tables. Urethane cement is unaffected because it displaces moisture. Use it alone to remediate problem slabs, or as a moisture vapor control layer under a decorative system.

Epoxy applied over high MVT traps vapor as water at the bond line, which causes delamination, so it usually needs a separate mitigation system.

Time savings, cost and appearance

Urethane cement goes onto green concrete and cures fast, so installs are quick with little production downtime. Material costs more than other systems, but lower labor and downtime make the installed price competitive. Color choices are limited, so many facilities install a decorative system over it.
