Questions to consider

Why waterproofing matters

Waterproofing floor coating is critical. Water damage can be costly in so many ways. Failures will cost time and money; money for property damage, money for equipment damage, money for shutdowns, money for increased insurance costs. By evaluating the specific needs of your facility, we can provide appropriate waterproof floor coating system recommendations and create a coating system that will protect your building or structure and everything in it.

Mechanical room waterproofing

Here are several situations that require different types of waterproof epoxy floor coating but serve the same purpose.

One of the most common situations in which Western Concrete Coatings installs waterproofing floor coating is for mechanical rooms. These areas are the source of plumbing and HVAC for every commercial building. Some mechanical rooms are located on basement and ground levels. Some are located on the top floor of multilevel buildings. The importance of protecting all floors below the mechanical room from water damage cannot be overstated. Using sealants around penetrations, installing flexible cove and integral base at all vertical applications and the correct plasticized epoxy or urethane to create a ‘bathtub’ to direct water to drains is the goal. Long term performance is critical. Material that won’t corrode, crack or turn brittle is essential. Installations must strictly meet manufacturer material mil thickness requirements and installers must meet prep and installation requirements. Attention to small details can make or break waterproofing concrete floors. Details include sealing penetrations, treating and isolating cracks, proper application of sealants for expansion joints, the use of fiberglass for reinforcement and attention to proper installation of coving.

Waterproofing wood subfloors

Installation of epoxy coatings on wood subfloors begins with the correct waterproof epoxy floor coating. It is important to note that most wood subfloors will need to be stiffened and will need additional layers added prior to waterproofing. 1 ¼” minimum subfloor thickness is typically required. 1 ½” thickness is suggested. Creating a subfloor with minimal movement and flexibility is the key. Suggested installation includes pretreating all wood joints with waterproof material and applying fiberglass mesh to strengthen these joints, especially around the perimeter. Also, using large rolls of fiberglass across the full footprint of the floor and encapsulating that fiberglass into the waterproofing material creates a durable, crack resistant base coat. Apply an intermediate coat of waterproofing floor coating over the base coat, add cove and base and the waterproofing is complete. Now nearly any resinous floor can be installed over the waterproof epoxy floor coating system without worry.
